Net Metering
Net metering allows owners of grid-tied solar systems to receive bill credits for excess electricity that their setup sends to the grid. Montana requires utility companies to offer a 1:1 ratio, which means for every extra kilowatt you produce, you’ll get a kilowatt of credit.
Currently, the 1:1 ratio is a permanent feature on any new solar power build, but Montana lawmakers have attempted to raise the ratio before – something that would impact potential savings.
Don’t let others stand in the way of your money. Contact YellowBall to secure net metering for life.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Energy for America Program can fund renewable energy systems or energy efficiency improvements for eligible agricultural producers and rural small businesses.
Eligible applicants in areas of less than 50,000 people could earn grants of up to 50% of total eligible project costs and/or loans for up to 75% of total eligible project costs. Funds may be used for the purchase, installation and construction of renewable energy projects or energy efficiency improvements.
The application window for the grant is currently closed through September 30. Visit the USDA website for more information.
State and Local Incentives
Montana offers many state and local-level incentives for solar energy that could help with installation costs.

Solar Frequently Asked Questions
How do solar panels work?
Solar panels convert sunlight into electricity through photovoltaic (PV) cells. That electricity is then sent to an inverter, which converts it into usable power for your home. If your system produces more electricity than you use, it can be stored in a battery (if installed) or sent back to the grid for energy credits.
How long does solar installation take?
Project timelines depend on the size and complexity of the job; no two are the same. YellowBall cannot provide estimates over the phone and will need to inspect your roof’s capabilities for better clarity about project length. Once inspection is complete, however, we will provide a clear schedule to you before starting on your solar project and keep you informed on the timeline throughout the entire process.
How long do solar panels last?
Solar panels are designed to be a long-term, sustainable energy solution for your home with average lifespans of about 25-30 years. Weather conditions, manufacturing quality and regular maintenance can also affect how long solar panels last.
What maintenance is required for solar power systems?
Typically, regular cleaning of the panels to remove dirt, dust and debris is all you need to do to keep your solar panels maintained on a day-to-day basis. We recommend taking advantage of our free solar inspection services every few years to check for any underlying issues to the system.
Will solar power work on cloudy, rainy or snowy days?
Yes! Modern solar energy systems are adept at capturing broad spectrums of light, garnering energy for your home even when there isn’t much sunlight. In the winter, snow can even help to reflect light and improve efficiency once it melts off, though excessive snowfall may require removal for optimal performance.
How much does a solar power system cost?
The cost of installing a solar power system varies widely on factors such as system size, the quality of panels, installation and location. On average, residential solar installations can range from $15,000 to $25,000, though many homeowners qualify for federal and state tax credits, rebates and/or financing options that significantly lower upfront costs.
What are the financial incentives for going solar?
Not only are there a variety of federal and state-level tax credits and grants available for solar installations, but a decreased reliance on grid power additionally means reduced electric bills and use of fossil fuels. Plus, properties with solar power systems also typically rise in value.
Are there financing options available for solar power systems?
Yes! Through our partners at Clearwater Credit Union and Sunlight Financial, eligible homeowners can secure pre-qualified rates in minutes to assist with their YellowBall solar power system project. Visit our Financing page for more information.
Are there any hidden fees or additional costs?
No! YellowBall does not believe in surprise fees or upselling, and we pride ourselves on honest pricing. We will thoroughly explain every line item on your detailed upfront estimate and prioritize frequent communication and transparency throughout your project.
